SMED changeover observation template
A CSV time-study sheet for internal and external setup, concurrent work, safe preparation and verification.
Download the SMED changeover observation template (CSV). Opens in spreadsheet applications; no email or signup required. Fields and an explicitly labeled example row are included. Replace the example before use.
Record a representative changeover from last accepted good unit to first accepted good unit, or document the site's chosen boundary. Note product pair, tooling, staffing and abnormal conditions before comparing studies.
Observe individual tasks
Use seconds from a common study start. Mark internal work that requires the stopped machine and external work that can be completed while the previous job runs. Record concurrent tasks explicitly: their labor durations can be added, but overlapping tasks do not add directly to elapsed downtime.
Preserve required work
Look for preparation, retrieval and adjustment improvements. Do not delete isolation, cleaning, inspection or quality-release steps to achieve a shorter number. Review proposed task moves with the responsible operators, maintenance and quality owners.
Verify repeatability
Compare several similar product transitions after the change. Report elapsed time, labor effort, startup scrap and downstream holds. A faster first restart is not a faster accepted changeover if good output arrives later.
